He was the inspiration of the French team that won the 1984 European Championship. He was the first to be elected European Footballer of the Year on three successive years 1983-85. After starting his career in France with Nancy and St Etienne, he moved to Italy in 1982 where he played for Juventus. He represented his country on 72 occasions, scoring a record 41 goals and playing in three World Cups. He became manager of the French national team in 1988.
